Today, in Black History we celebrate the life of Trayvon Martin and the lessons we’ve learned from the events surrounding his death and legal litigations. Trayvon Martin was murdered in 2012 at the hands of Zimmerman who claimed self defense while using the Stand your Ground Laws in the state of Florida. He was visiting with his Dad at his his fiancées townhome in a gated community which served as the crime scene. Although, a dispatcher gave Zimmerman direct instructions to not pursue the hoodied Martin. He did anyways which soonresulted in Martins death.
We learned that our children aren’t safe. We need to protect them and educate them on discrimination, prejudice and racial inequalities. We learned to have conversations about wearing hoodies and racial profiling.
Since the death of Trayvon Martin lawmakers have had to review the allowing of deadly force in self-defense – so-called “stand your ground” laws – so they aren't encouraging, rather than preventing, lethal violence.
On December 2019, Zimmerman filed a lawsuit against the Martin Family to collect damages. Stay tuned for updates on this story and others by subscribing to the website today
